My characters, as a general rule, are nothing like me, save one.
I do, however, the longer I play a character, tend to take on certain personality traits of the character in question. I tend to gawk now and then at shiny objects for my own amusement, a trait I did not have before playing Kereth extensively. Certain other aspects though, such as Kereth's homicidal tendancies, [withheld]'s stuttering and reserved nature, and [also withheld]'s female gender, remain guardedly distant from my own self.

Being fairly new here on the RP scene, my supply of anecdotes is rather limited, but I'll go ahead and give it a shot.
In theory, RP is a perfect opportunity to combine the wonders of storytelling with interactive gaming. In practice, it gets a little complicated.
I love the idea of crafting a character, letting it out into the creative world, and watching what it does with everyone else. ("That's my kid! You see it? Right over there with yours! Aren't they adorable?")
On the other hand, I'm not too fond of treating people like dirt or depriving the environment of laughter. I like who I am--a delightfully cheerful optimist, liberally seasoned with dark humor for that deliciously rich taste--and I like how people react to me. Combine this with my desire to experiment with new and different character personalities, and you see my dilemma.
Currently, I'm working at making Levity into a character that satisfies both of these cravings--something that feels different but is fun to play. It's taking some time, but I'll be sure to let everyone know when I think I've perfected this endeavor.
Does this answer your question? Hmm, looking back it seems a little wordy. What I mean to say is this: I have trouble keeping my characters different from me for reasons concerning emotional ethics rather than from any difficulty with intellectual discipline.
